Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Informatics EngineeringTraditional cryptographic standards are designed with a desktop and server environment in mind, so, with the relatively recent proliferation of small, resource constrained devices in the Internet of Things, sensor networks, embedded systems, and more, there has been a call for lightweight cryptographic standards with security, performance and resource requirements tailored for the highly-constrained environments these devices find themselves in. In 2015 the National Institute of Standards and Technology began a Standardization Process in order to select one or more Lightweight Cryptographic algorithms. Out of the original 57 submissions ten finalists remain, with ASCON and Romulus being among the most scrutinized out of them. In this dissertation I will introduce some concepts required for easy understanding of the body of work, do an up-to-date revision on the current situation on the standardization process from a security and performance standpoint, a description of ASCON and Romulus, and new best known analysis, and a comparison of the two, with their advantages, drawbacks, and unique traits.

    Get PDF
Background: Pituitary adenomas are the most common cause of sellar tumors after the third decade of life. They can lead to visual impairment due to a close anatomical relationship with the optic chiasm. The purpose of this study is to evaluate visual outcomes after endoscopic pituitary adenoma surgery in patients from Egas Moniz hospital between January 2013 and August 2020. Material and methods: Patients with pituitary adenoma with pre- and post-surgical ophthalmological evaluation were retrospectively included. Pre- and post-surgical visual parameters, clinical, imaging, histological, and surgical data were selected, and a descriptive analysis was performed. Pre- and post-surgical visual parameters were compared using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Improvement criteria were defined: pre-surgical visual complaints > post-surgical visual complaints; visual acuity (VA) (LogMAR) pre-surgical > VA (LogMAR) post-surgical; pre-surgical chromatic vision > post-surgical chromatic vision; visual field mean sensitivity (MS) post-surgical > visual field MS pre-surgical + 1; visual field temporal mean sensitivity (MST) post-surgical > visual field MST pre-surgical + 1; visual field nasal mean sensitivity (MSN) post-surgical > visual field MSN pre-surgical + 1. Results and Discussion: Of the total 18 patients included, 11 (68.8%) fulfilled all improvement criteria, and 14 (82.4%) fulfilled at least one. These results go with the current scientific evidence that pituitary adenoma resection in patients with pre-surgical visual symptoms considerably improves these symptoms. Conclusion: Standardization of visual evaluation may be a key point to identify prognostic factors for visual functionrecovery after surgery

EVALUATION OF AN HPHT UNIT COUPLED WITH NIR PROBE TO DETERMINE ASPHALTENES PRECIPITATION ONSET UNDER DIFFERENT PRESSURES

    Get PDF
Asphaltenes are characterized as the crude oil fraction with the highest molar mass and polarity, presetting mainly (poly) aromatic groups. The flocculation and deposition of asphaltenes causes large losses to the oil industry. Understanding the phase behavior of asphaltenes under conditions closer to those found in reservoirs is important. Therefore, LMCP/UFRJ started operating a high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) unit coupled to a near-infrared spectrometer probe that can use different flocculants. This work describes the development of a procedure as well as the validation of the results obtained from this unit. Due to the complex composition of crude oil, model systems (MS) were prepared with asphaltenes extracted with n-pentane (C5I) and n-heptane (C7I). The experiments were carried out at atmospheric pressure, titrated with n-heptane, and at 100 and 300 bar titrated with propane. As expected, C7I asphaltenes were more unstable, presenting lower precipitation onset than C5I asphaltenes under ambient conditions and higher pressures. However, for both MS, the stability increased with rising pressure when using propane as a solvent. The proposed method to evaluate asphaltenes precipitation onset was effective for MS in toluene and dead crude oil, and is a promising alternative for investigation of different types of crude oil

Portuguese Football Federation consensus statement 2020: nutrition and performance in football

    Get PDF
Nutrition is an undeniable part of promoting health and performance among football (soccer) players. Nevertheless, nutritional strategies adopted in elite football can vary significantly depending on culture, habit and practical constraints and might not always be supported by scientific evidence. Therefore, a group of 28 Portuguese experts on sports nutrition, sports science and sports medicine sought to discuss current practices in the elite football landscape and review the existing evidence on nutritional strategies to be applied when supporting football players. Starting from understanding football's physical and physiological demands, five different moments were identified: preparing to play, match-day, recovery after matches, between matches and during injury or rehabilitation periods. When applicable, specificities of nutritional support to young athletes and female players were also addressed. The result is a set of practical recommendations that gathered consensus among involved experts, highlighting carbohydrates periodisation, hydration and conscious use of dietary supplements.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Trabalho apresentado em EAIR 41st Annual Forum, 25-28 agosto 2019, Leiden, Países Baixos.Polytechnic Institutes in Portugal: research on the impact of twelve institutes on the local economy Higher Education Institutions are recognized as important actors in regional development. The Portuguese higher education system comprises both Universities and Polytechnic Institutes, which face an increasing pressure to demonstrate that their presence has an impact on the surrounding communities contributing to their economic development. This paper presents the estimation of the economic impact of twelve Polytechnic Institutes, located in quite diverse regions, based on a shared model so that comparisons have a collective framework of analysis. The main results obtained show that the economic impact ranged from 1.8% to 10.6% of the local GDP and that these Institutes are major local employers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Comparative Effectiveness of COVID-19 Vaccines in Preventing Infections and Disease Progression from SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.5 and BA.2, Portugal

    Get PDF
We estimated comparative primary and booster vaccine effectiveness (VE) of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.5 and BA.2 lineages against infection and disease progression. During April-June 2022, we implemented a case-case and cohort study and classified lineages using whole-genome sequencing or spike gene target failure. For the case-case study, we estimated the adjusted odds ratios (aORs) of vaccination using a logistic regression. For the cohort study, we estimated VE against disease progression using a penalized logistic regression. We observed no reduced VE for primary (aOR 1.07 [95% CI 0.93-1.23]) or booster (aOR 0.96 [95% CI 0.84-1.09]) vaccination against BA.5 infection. Among BA.5 case-patients, booster VE against progression to hospitalization was lower than that among BA.2 case-patients (VE 77% [95% CI 49%-90%] vs. VE 93% [95% CI 86%-97%]). Although booster vaccination is less effective against BA.5 than against BA.2, it offers substantial protection against progression from BA.5 infection to severe disease. The acquisition of sequencing equipment and reagents used in this study by the Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge was partially funded by the HERA project (grant no. 2021/PHF/23776) supported by the European Commission through the European Centre for Disease Control, and also partially funded by the GenomePT project (grant no. THOR is a targetable epigenetic biomarker with clinical implications in breast cancer

    Get PDF
Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and a leading cause of death among women worldwide. Early BC is potentially curable, but the mortality rates still observed among BC patients demon‑ strate the urgent need of novel and more efective diagnostic and therapeutic options. Limitless self-renewal is a hallmark of cancer, governed by telomere maintenance. In around 95% of BC cases, this process is achieved by telom‑ erase reactivation through upregulation of the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT). The hypermethylation of a specifc region within the hTERT promoter, termed TERT hypermethylated oncological region (THOR) has been associated with increased hTERT expression in cancer. However, its biological role and clinical potential in BC have never been studied to the best of our knowledge. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the role of THOR as a biomarker and explore the functional impact of THOR methylation status in hTERT upregulation in BC.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
